Les Mickle is a “home-grown” contractor. He was born in Cottonwood, Arizona, and he was raised in the Verde Valley, which has always been his home.
The Mickle family pioneers came to Verde Valley by horse and wagon in 1875. They started a small dairy and served Jerome with milk and dairy products during its early history-making years. Les’ dad was a cattleman and horse-breaker who owned several ranches in the Verde Valley during his lifetime. The Mickle family values of hard work, honesty and fairness were passed down to each generation.
After graduating from Mingus Union High School in Jerome, Les went to Phoenix to enroll in the Carpenter’s Apprenticeship Program. The requirements of this vigorous four-year program were two-fold: he had to work forty hours a week for licensed contractors in the building Industry; and he had to take courses at night school. He graduated with a Journeyman Carpenter’s Degree; and he came back home to the Verde Valley where he continued working and learning about the building trade.
In 1983, Les and his wife, Terri, started Mickle’s Custom Homes in order to help people “build their dream home” at a fair price. They have three sons: Andy, Clint and Jacob. Andy and Clint went on job sites with Les when they were youngsters and started learning the building process. Andy had a talent for operating heavy equipment which he does for a living. Jacob attends college, and he is training in the engineering field. Clint chose to work and learn the intricacies of home construction. He has become one of the best finished carpenters in the area, which helps Mickle’s Custom Homes to be one of the most sought-after building companies in the Verde Valley.
